Framing and posing

What to do with your hands in a portrait

Give your hands a small, believable job. Resting them comfortably often looks more natural than copying an elaborate pose that does not fit you or the setting.

Start with ordinary positions

Try one hand resting lightly on a chair, holding a cup naturally or sitting with hands relaxed. Avoid gripping objects tightly or hiding both hands in a way that makes the shoulders tense.

Check the frame

  1. Relax the fingers between pictures.
  2. Keep hands away from the face unless the gesture is natural.
  3. Avoid cropping exactly through a wrist when possible.
  4. Compare the whole posture, not only the fingers.

A coffee cup can work in a café portrait if you would actually be holding it. It becomes distracting when lifted awkwardly just to occupy your hands.

Keep the useful version

Choose the frame where your shoulders and expression look comfortable. You do not need a new hand pose in every photo. For a close headshot, leaving the hands outside the frame may be the simplest solution; for a wider picture, let the activity explain the gesture.
