Light and location

How coloured walls affect your portrait

A strongly coloured wall can reflect its colour onto your face. Move farther away or change your angle if one side of your skin takes on an obvious tint.

Check the reflected light

Take an unfiltered frame and compare the two sides of your face. Bright red, green or yellow surroundings may contribute colour even when the main light looks neutral.

Adjust the scene

  1. Step away from the wall.
  2. Turn towards a more neutral open area.
  3. Keep the coloured surface in the background if it still works.
  4. Compare the new frame before editing.

A green hedge can be an attractive backdrop, but standing very close may create a green cast under the chin. A little separation can improve both colour and background depth.

Use colour deliberately

You do not need to remove every hint of the environment. The aim is believable skin and a clear expression. If correction changes the rest of the picture unnaturally, choose the frame with better original light rather than pushing the edit further.
