Identify the kind of softness
Look for motion trails, missed focus or heavy compression. A slightly soft export differs from a photograph where the face moved during capture. Inspect the original rather than a messaging preview.
Make the decision
- Find the highest-quality source file.
- Compare it at a normal viewing size.
- Try only a modest sharpening adjustment if appropriate.
- Retake in better light when detail is missing.
Strong halos around hair and glasses are a sign that the edit is becoming more visible than the improvement. A clean new frame will often look more natural.
Preserve recognisable detail
Do not use generated facial reconstruction as if it restored the real original. If an enhancement invents eyelashes, teeth or skin texture, judge it as a generated interpretation. For an introductory profile portrait, a straightforward sharp photograph is usually the easier result to trust.
