Framing and posing

How to take a walking portrait without motion blur

Use good light, move slowly and review sharpness before taking many frames. A walking picture should communicate ease, not hide the face in blur.

Plan a short path

Choose a safe, uncluttered stretch where neither person has to watch traffic or dodge pedestrians. Agree on where you will walk and where the photographer will stand.

Keep the movement small

  1. Start with a normal standing frame.
  2. Walk a short distance at a relaxed pace.
  3. Look towards the photographer briefly rather than staring continuously.
  4. Check the face and hands for blur.

If the camera struggles, try pausing mid-step for a moment instead of walking faster and hoping for a candid result. The picture can still feel natural without requiring a difficult action shot.

Select for expression

Discard frames where a blink, swinging arm or awkward stride dominates. A wider walking image can add variety to a profile, but it should not replace a clear face-led photograph. Keep enough surroundings to explain the movement while avoiding distant, unrecognisable framing.
