Clothes and expression

How to get a natural smile in a profile photo

Give yourself short breaks and something ordinary to respond to. Holding a smile continuously can create tension that becomes more obvious with every frame.

Make the session conversational

Ask the photographer to talk with you rather than count down every picture. Look away between frames, relax the jaw and return to the camera when you feel settled.

Compare expressions gently

  1. Take a neutral, comfortable frame first.
  2. Try a small smile and a fuller one.
  3. Pause before repeating.
  4. Choose the expression you recognise in yourself.

A technically perfect grin may feel less like you than a quieter expression. The goal is not to imitate a stock-photo face but to look approachable in a way that is believable.

Avoid editing the expression into place

Do not reshape the mouth or invent teeth to rescue an uncomfortable frame. Retaking a few pictures in a calmer moment is usually a better starting point. A relaxed expression, clear light and a recognisable face do more useful work than a forced universal “best smile”.
