Light and location

How to avoid patchy shadows in outdoor portraits

Move until the light is even across your face. Small gaps between leaves can create bright patches that distract from your expression and are difficult to correct cleanly.

Inspect the face before the scenery

A beautiful tree-lined background does not guarantee flattering light at your exact position. Ask the photographer to look for bright spots on the nose, forehead and clothing while you move a step at a time.

Find a stable setup

  1. Choose broad shade rather than broken leaf shadows.
  2. Face towards an open, brighter area.
  3. Keep a little distance from the background.
  4. Recheck after the wind or your position changes.

A single bright patch across one eye can dominate a thumbnail. Moving half a step may solve the problem without changing the whole location.

Avoid a repair-heavy selection

Compare the original frames before editing. Choose the one with consistent light and a comfortable expression, even if another has a more dramatic background. A dating portrait benefits from easy recognition; complicated lighting is optional.
